The Farthest North Patrol

Public Events

Throughout the year, the Fairbanks Ski Patrol holds a number of entertaining and educational events that are open to the public.

Warren Miller Entertainment and the Fairbanks Ski Patrol

Early in the fall, we help you start getting excited about the upcoming season by showing Warren Miller Entertainment’s annual ski film. Warren Miller films have been a skiing (and more recently riding) tradition since before most of us were born. They bring humor, exotic locales, and mountain culture to the big screen in Fairbanks, Alaska. Our annual showing of Warren Miller Entertainment’s ski film is a fun filled event full of old friends and great door prizes (thanks to our many sponsors).

Hosting the Warren Miller Entertainment annual ski film is one of the ways we fund our operations and training budgets. Come on out, watch a film, maybe win a door prize, and get a well-trained ski patrol. That’s a value which is hard to beat.

The Fairbanks Ski Patrol/Fairbanks Alpine Ski Club Ski Swap

For all you gear junkies out there, the Fairbanks Ski Patrol and the Fairbanks Alpine Ski Club come together just before the season begins to co-host an annual ski and gear swap. This is a combined fund raising event for both of our organizations. If you are looking for new or used skis, a board, or just about any kind of winter outdoor gear at a great price, the FSP/FASC gear swap is worth checking out. Not sure if something is right for you? We have a large staff of knowledgeable patrollers, coaches, and racers on hand to help you make your selection and answer your questions.

If you are more interested in selling gear than buying, we will try to sell your gear for you at the ski swap in return for a small percentage of the price. Decide on a price, bring your gear to us the day before the swap (gear also accepted during the swap), and we will do the work for you. The percentage we keep is used to fund FSP/FASC operations.

Public Education

The Fairbanks Ski Patrol, like our parent organization, the National Ski Patrol, is primarily a training organization. Occasionally we will open National Ski Patrol training events to the public when we perceive there to be an under met need.

During the 2008-2009 season we brought 15 students, both patrollers and non-patrollers, together for an NSP avalanche 1 course. This proved to be a popular event. Students spent several days in a classroom learning how humans, snow pack, terrain, and weather interact to produce avalanche hazard. They learned tools and techniques that will help them estimate the avalanche hazard, and how to respond to an avalanche burial as a member of a group. These skills were put to the test during a one day field exercise where students demonstrated proficiency in snow pack, terrain, and weather analysis, as well as route selection skills. At the end of the field exercise, several realistic avalanche rescue scenarios were present to the students including single and multiple burials with and without a beacon. We are proud to say they all passed with flying colors, and were still smiling at the end of the day despite putting in some hard work.
